XMTP Labs Plans to End Its Shared Messaging Network in Early 2027

XMTP Labs plans to wind down the centrally operated version of its messaging network in the opening months of 2027, shifting the protocol toward software users can host independently. The planned open-source system is designed to support encrypted conversations between people and AI agents. It will not require a crypto token or wallet. XMTP co-founder Shane Mac said efforts to grow Web3 social and messaging through partners did not create sustainable demand.
