On October 16, 2026, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) formally requested that a federal judge dismiss CME Group’s lawsuit regarding the competition for US crypto perpetual futures contracts. The CFTC asserted that CME Group had failed to demonstrate how the approval of similar products by competing exchanges would materially harm its business interests. In documents filed with the federal court presided over by Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly, the CFTC maintained that CME needs to establish a real or imminent increase in competition to justify its case, something the regulator claims CME has not accomplished.
