BIP-54 aims to patch four flaws in Bitcoin's consensus rules, and its backers think it could be the network's next soft fork Bitcoin ’s next big protocol upgrade may not be a flashy one. The leading candidate is a cleanup job: a proposal to fix four flaws in the network’s consensus rules that have been sitting there since the protocol launched in 2009. The proposal is formally known as BIP-54, or the Great Consensus Cleanup. A soft fork is a backward-compatible rule change. It tightens what the network accepts without forcing everyone onto a new chain.
