Zcash, a privacy-focused cryptocurrency network that uses zero-knowledge proofs to protect user transaction data, completed its Ironwood upgrade on July 28, 2026, at block 3,428,143. Ironwood introduced a new category of shielded notes designed to enable possible fund recovery in the event that current cryptographic protections become obsolete, particularly in the face of emerging quantum computing threats. With the activation of the Ironwood shielded pool through the NU6.3 upgrade, Zcash opened a transition path for holders wishing to prepare for quantum security risks. The upgrade established stricter controls on the earlier Orchard pool and implemented additional safeguards for transfers.
