A UV-driven composite built from graphene aerogel and the titanium metal-organic framework MIL-125-NH2(Ti) achieved a 90.2% defluorination rate for PFOA in lab tests. The material, developed by teams at Wuxi University, Nanjing University of Science and Technology, and Nanjing University, also broke down shorter-chain PFAS such as PFHxA (65.3%) and PFBA (51.8%) via photocatalysis and nanoconfinement. Water utilities can filter PFAS out of the flow, but actually destroying the chemicals is the hard part, thanks to carbon-fluorine bonds that shrug off conventional treatment.
