The United States has designated 6,576 communities as Qualified Opportunity Zones to attract private investment through tax incentives. Of those, 2,594 are rural areas eligible for enhanced investment benefits. In its “Treasury, IRS Announce Opportunity Zones Designations for Over 6,500 Communities Across America” report published on November 5, 2026, the US Department of the Treasury said it and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) had finalized designations across all 50 states, territories and the District of Columbia. All 6,576 eligible census tracts nominated within the statutory window were approved, with designations effective January 1, 2027, for ten years.
