Solana activated its long-awaited Alpenglow network upgrade on Wednesday, Oct. 21, marking one of the most significant overhauls in the blockchain’s history and promising to slash transaction finality times by roughly 99%. The upgrade, which Solana announced had gone live on its mainnet, replaces the blockchain’s existing consensus mechanism with a new system designed to finalize transactions in approximately 150 milliseconds, compared with the previous 12.8 seconds. Billed as the “biggest consensus upgrade in Solana’s history,” the improvement could make Solana substantially faster for applications requiring near-instant settlement, including decentralized finance (DeFi), cryptocurrency trading, and blockchain-based payments.
