Historical S&P 500 returns identify the calendar year after U.S. midterm elections as the strongest part of the presidential cycle, giving 2027 a favorable historical context without establishing a market forecast. An analysis of 19 presidential cycles from 1950 through 2025 found average S&P 500 price returns of 8.4% in the first year of the cycle, 4.6% in the midterm year, 17.2% in the following year and 8.1% in the presidential-election year. The figures exclude dividends. The 17.2% result measures the calendar year after a midterm election.
