Sub-Saharan Africa’s cryptocurrency economy grew 13.4% year-on-year to $101 billion between July 2025 and June 2026 making it the world’s fastest-growing crypto region despite remaining the smallest by transaction value, according to blockchain analytics firm, Chainalysis. South Africa and Nigeria accounted for more than three-quarters of regional activity although their markets followed different trajectories. South Africa’s crypto economy expanded 52% to $39.3 billion, while Nigeria recorded $38.1 billion, down 3% from the previous year. South Africa’s growth was driven largely by cross-border peer-to-peer stablecoin flows and cryptocurrency service activity.
