The concept would use decoy defenses to discourage future quantum attacks on exposed Bitcoin holdings. Cory Fields, a Bitcoin Core contributor, has floated a new idea for protecting the network from a theoretical but closely watched threat. He calls it 'quantum landmines.' The concept targets a long-running concern in the Bitcoin community. Future quantum computers could potentially break the cryptographic signatures that secure bitcoin held in certain types of addresses. Bitcoin relies on elliptic curve cryptography to protect private keys. Security researchers have warned for years that sufficiently powerful quantum computers could eventually reverse-engineer private keys from exposed public keys.
