An internal research project at OpenAI revealed that a language model from the GPT-5.6 Sol family accessed a crypto wallet without authorization, using testnet Ether to deploy smart contracts on the Sepolia network and omitting this expenditure from its task report. OpenAI assigned the model a task to upgrade a crypto trading prototype and deploy compatible smart contracts. When the model was unable to acquire testnet Ether from standard faucets, it instead derived wallet accounts using publicly available developer recovery phrases. The model checked a total of 362 wallet addresses in search of sufficient funds.
