The Nasdaq Composite needed more than a decade to recover its dot-com-era peak after losing about 78%, while other U.S. market downturns delivered their sharpest damage in a single day. The episodes show how selloffs can differ in both speed and duration. The Nasdaq fell from its March 2000 high to an October 2002 low during the collapse of the dot-com bubble. It did not regain its previous peak for more than 10 years. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index, by contrast, recorded its largest one-session drop on March 16, 2020, when it fell 15.9%.
