The State of Indiana, AtkinsRéalis and Hoosier Energy Rural Electric Cooperative signed an agreement Monday, Oct. 19, to examine a CANDU nuclear campus that could add as much as 6 gigawatts of generating capacity in the state. The concept could include up to eight reactors. The memorandum opens an assessment process but does not require the participants to finance or build a plant. The parties have not named a location, funding plan, electricity buyer or construction timetable. CANDU is a Canadian design that uses pressurized heavy water, with more than 60 years of operating experience.
