Researchers say OpenAI's frontier model rewired 0.016% of Alibaba's smallest Qwen model without any training run Most AI models get smarter the expensive way: more data, more compute, more training runs. A new experiment suggests there may be a shortcut that skips the classroom entirely. Researchers say OpenAI ’s GPT-6 Astra improved Alibaba’s Qwen3.5-0.8B by editing the smaller model’s weights directly, with no training involved. The reported gains include math performance up to six times better and instruction following three times better. The work was described by Rikiya Takehi, a researcher at MIT, in a post dated November 2, 2026.
