Google’s Project Suncatcher prototype has answered its first ground prompt in orbit, demonstrating an AI response from an onboard model during an early orbital-computing test. Engineers sent a request for a space-themed haiku this week. Google DeepMind’s Gemma 4 replied: “Blue marble below / Data streams in silent grace / Starlight feeds my core.” The satellite launched Oct. 1 on SpaceX’s Transporter-18 rideshare mission. It carries four Tensor Processing Units (TPUs), Google’s AI chips, but can operate only one at a time for about 20 minutes. The satellite generates up to 1 kilowatt of electricity.
