GLP-1 households shift food choices more than they cut spending

Households using GLP-1 weight-loss drugs spent slightly more on dining out by the middle of their second year of treatment than before they started. The broader change was in what they bought, rather than a sustained reduction in food spending. These households were already above-average food spenders before treatment. Andreessen Horowitz argued that a modest increase in dining spending did not establish that treatment was ineffective. One possible explanation was a shift toward healthier foods that could cost more. Andreessen Horowitz said widespread adoption of GLP-1 drugs had prompted predictions of a sharp contraction in dining and consumer packaged goods.
