GitHub Sets Out Four Ways to Tailor Copilot to Repository Workflows

Photo: TokenPost
Developers can tailor GitHub Copilot to repository-specific workflows through four configuration methods that define project rules, automate repeatable procedures and connect the assistant to external tools. A guide published Oct. 12 describes repository custom instructions, agent skills, custom agents and Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers as separate ways to adapt Copilot for development work. Repository-wide rules can be placed in .github/copilot-instructions.md to define architecture patterns, naming conventions and testing expectations. Developers can also use path-specific files in .github/instructions, where an applyTo field limits instructions to matching file types. Agent skills are designed for repeatable procedures.
