European Central Bank (ECB) President Christine Lagarde has announced plans to leave her position on February 7, 2027, nearly nine months before her eight-year term ends in October. She informed the ECB Governing Council and European Council President António Costa of her decision on October 29, 2026. Her early departure has pushed the search for her successor. Former Dutch central bank governor Klaas Knot and Bank for International Settlements General Manager Pablo Hernández de Cos emerged as early frontrunners. I have just informed my colleagues that I will step down as @ECB President on 7 February 2027.
