China imported more than 1,000 metric tons of gold during the first eight months of 2026, surpassing its full-year 2025 total as demand broadened beyond official reserve purchases and reduced exposure to dollar assets. The January-through-August total exceeded the 886 metric tons imported during all of 2025. The imports reflected demand from the People’s Bank of China, commercial institutions, exchange-traded funds, bullion investors and jewelry buyers, rather than central-bank purchases alone. The People’s Bank of China (PBoC) added 20.2 metric tons of gold in August, its largest monthly increase since October 2023.
