Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) announced it would receive an $85 million federal award to develop advanced chips for the fusion power industry. The award falls under the CHIPS Act. The award also grants the federal government a stake in CFS. The award outlines five research areas: silicon carbide power electronics, radio-frequency generators, faster reactor controls, radiation-resistant electronics and adaptations of artificial intelligence hardware for power plants. Silicon carbide components manage high voltages. In fusion systems, powerful electrical pulses drive superconducting magnets that confine plasma. CFS also plans to develop radio-frequency generators, which heat fusion fuel.
