Regulated Bitcoin futures helped open cryptocurrency markets to institutional investors by enabling trading on both rising and falling prices, while reinforcing dollar-based pricing. Digital assets are now developing into the underlying structure of finance, former U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission chairman Christopher Giancarlo said. In a Schwab Network interview on November 2, Giancarlo described the launch of regulated Bitcoin futures in December 2017 as a turning point for market maturity. The ability to take positions on either side of the market, he said, was essential to attracting institutional investment.
