About 35% of Planned U.S. Data-Center Capacity May Be Built

Only about 35% of announced U.S. data-center capacity is likely to be built, suggesting the pipeline includes far more proposed capacity than projects likely to materialize. The estimate draws on thousands of planned facilities. It comes as electricity shortages delay projects and developers face practical hurdles to turning announcements into construction, including securing power, permits and customers. Some of the largest proposals have been called “bragawatts.” The term describes big projects announced by companies that often have little experience building data centers. Some proposals have not secured electricity, construction permits or customers.
