Abdul El-Sayed Calls for Public Oversight of Frontier AI Systems

Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed is calling for a pause in frontier artificial-intelligence research until it can be conducted safely, putting public oversight at the center of his AI policy platform. El-Sayed said Sept. 13 that frontier AI research should pause until safety conditions are in place. He linked the position to concerns about employment, public safety, surveillance and the use of AI in high-risk decisions. His campaign’s June 29 platform, “AI Under Democracy,” proposed requiring frontier AI labs to become public-benefit corporations.
