Australia has laid out the ground rules for crypto. On October 15, ASIC published proposed operating standards that give exchanges and custody providers their clearest look yet at what compliance will actually cost starting in April 2027. Under the new setup, platforms will need dedicated financial services licenses, alongside strict regulations around client asset protection, trade execution, and conflicts of interest. There is, however, still some friction regarding capital requirements. If a platform holds customer assets directly, ASIC may require up to A$14 million in net tangible assets.
