Williams Says One More Fed Hike May Be Appropriate This Year

New York Fed President John Williams said another Federal Reserve rate increase this year may be appropriate, while he currently sees no need for additional hikes in 2027. Williams expects inflation to slow significantly next year and move closer to the Fed’s 2% target as the effects of tariffs and higher energy prices fade. He also said the U.S. economy is not overheating and that labor-market conditions are not creating additional inflation pressure. The comments come as markets expect a rate increase in December and two more hikes in 2027. Treasury yields edged lower after Williams’ remarks.
