Top Chinese AI models trail the U.S. frontier in general capability by an estimated 6.5 months, putting a number on the technology gap central to U.S. chip policy. The Oct. 19 calculation uses benchmark trends and model release dates to estimate the lag between the countries’ leading model capabilities. It does not assign a 6.5-month delay to every Chinese model or directly compare the countries’ latest releases. A separate software-task time-horizon benchmark puts the estimated lag at about 6.6 months. The Chinese scores in that calculation use an older version of the benchmark, a limitation when interpreting the figure.
