Seven months ago, the industry watched a controlled pilot in Madrid and London where Mastercard and Santander executed Europe’s first live end-to-end AI agent payment. It was a technical proof of concept, not a commercial product. As the industry gathers at Money20/20 this week, the question is no longer whether an AI agent can move money, but why the rest of us are still waiting to use one. The March 2026 pilot served as a necessary proof point, demonstrating that Mastercard Agent Pay and PayOS orchestration could bridge the gap between intent and settlement.
