Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan, Morgan Stanley, Barclays, Deutsche Bank, UBS and HSBC forecast that the Federal Reserve will raise its benchmark interest rate by 25 basis points in December. A 25-basis-point increase equals a quarter of a percentage point and would match the size of the Fed's September move. That increase was the Fed's first rate hike in more than three years. In a separate survey of 100 economists , all 100 expected a December increase, while 94 expected the Fed to hold rates at its October meeting. The survey measured economists' expectations; the seven-institution outlook adds forecasts from financial institutions.
