TL;DR: Satoshi Nakamoto created Bitcoin’s original alert system in 2010 to protect the network during emergencies, allowing trusted, signed warnings to reach nodes without interrupting mining. However, concerns over security and key management eventually led BTC Core to retire the system and publicly release its alert key.
