Prime Intellect acquires Moondream to speed up AI inference

The $1 billion AI infrastructure startup is buying a tiny open-source shop for its GPU optimization tools, not its vision model Prime Intellect, the San Francisco AI infrastructure startup, is acquiring Moondream, an open-source multimodal AI company. The goal is faster AI inference at a lower computing cost. The deal was announced on October 13, 2026. On paper it’s a small company buying an even smaller one. In practice, it’s a bet that the next fight in AI is about running models efficiently, not just building bigger ones.
