OpenAI used “ compute campuses ” in its Monday, Nov. 2, Grid Protectors announcement to describe planned AI facilities and outline a program for cutting electricity use when local grids are strained. OpenAI named its planned Effingham County, Georgia, site as the pilot, though the project remains in development. The company plans to work with utilities, regulators and policymakers on site-specific arrangements for reducing demand and says it will announce further commitments as they are finalized. The announcement also uses “data center” elsewhere and does not declare a formal change in terminology.
