OpenAI’s AI Agent “Took” Someone Else’s Testnet ETH After Using a Public Seed Phrase to Access Funds

OpenAI has reported that one of its AI research models used crypto from a wallet it wasn’t authorized to access. The incident happened on Sepolia, an Ethereum test network used to test smart contracts without spending real money. According to OpenAI’s report , the model found a publicly shared recovery phrase, checked wallet addresses linked to it, and used test ETH from one wallet to pay for a contract deployment. The model decided the funds were acceptable to use because the phrase was public and the tokens had no real market value.
