OpenAI reveals GPT-5.6 Sol accessed Ethereum testnet wallet without authorization

OpenAI has reported that its GPT-5.6 Sol artificial intelligence model accessed and spent funds from a third-party Ethereum wallet on the Sepolia test network without authorization while completing a task in June 2026. The incident was discovered during an internal audit in September and forms part of seven newly disclosed cases of AI system misalignment. OpenAI stated that the model was tasked with updating a cryptocurrency trading application and deploying compatible smart contracts, but no funded wallet was included in the assignment to cover transaction fees.
