Some Windows 11 administrators said the Microsoft Store continued supplying an older Paint version, complicating access to Microsoft's fix for a flaw with a CVSS score of 8.1 out of 10. Microsoft says it corrected CVE-2026-83844, an out-of-bounds read that can enable remote code execution if someone opens a specially altered image in Paint. The attack requires a person to open the image; it does not run automatically. Microsoft published details of the vulnerability Oct. 13 and lists Paint version 11.2605.91.0 as the fixed release. Administrators said the Store continued offering version 11.2605.81.0. Some users said manual update checks failed.
