Google Prioritizes Frontier AI Compute Over Near-Term Cloud Revenue

Google is directing computing resources to frontier AI development at the cost of some near-term Google Cloud revenue, a trade-off disclosed as the cloud unit posts rapid growth. Google CEO Sundar Pichai said Tuesday that Google DeepMind’s research and frontier model development come first when the company allocates computing capacity, with other business needs planned around that work. “Our cloud business is at any given moment in time forgoing short-term revenues because we are making compute trade-offs to support frontier AI development,” Pichai said in an interview published Oct. 20.
