General Motors agreed to pay $220 million to resolve allegations by a coalition of state attorneys general that the automaker sold drivers’ behavior and location data to data brokers, which then sold the information to insurance companies. The complaint centered on GM’s Smart Driver program. It alleged that GM enrolled drivers without proper disclosure. The settlement requires GM to obtain drivers’ consent before collecting or sharing covered driving and location data. The agreement also requires GM to limit and protect the data it collects, assess its privacy program, and strengthen oversight and training at dealerships.
