A draft consensus upgrade aims to shrink the wait for irreversible settlement, potentially lowering costs for moving crypto across the network. Ethereum researchers have outlined a plan to shorten the time it takes for transactions to become irreversible, according to reporting from Coindoo, CoinDesk, and Bankless. The current wait, often cited at around 16 minutes, could fall to roughly four minutes under the proposed changes. Finality is the point at which a transaction on Ethereum is considered permanently settled and cannot be reversed. Ethereum uses a two-step checkpoint process under its proof-of-stake consensus design.
