DoorDash has agreed to acquire grocery-delivery rival Instacart in a deal valued at about $17 billion, combining two major delivery platforms as competition intensifies across food, grocery and retail. The deal will expand the range of products available to consumers through DoorDash’s delivery network, while giving Instacart access to more merchants and delivery infrastructure. Instacart shoppers will be able to buy from about 150,000 stores, up from roughly 100,000, the companies said. The acquisition also strengthens DoorDash’s position beyond restaurant delivery as platforms seek to capture more everyday consumer spending and improve the economics of their operations.
