Crypto Market Rankings Obscure Token Uses and Holder Rights

Crypto assets can be used to send payments, cover network fees, seek a dollar peg or access a financial product, so a market-capitalization ranking says little about what holders can use or claim. Market capitalization multiplies an asset’s quoted price by its circulating supply. Figures dated Oct. 25 UTC put Bitcoin (BTC) at about $1.625 trillion, Ether (ETH) at $287.9 billion and Tether’s USDt (USDT) at $182.5 billion. The measure helps compare their size, but it does not record how much money investors put into them or show whether every circulating unit could be sold at the quoted price.
