A 40-page complaint naming James Gates as plaintiff alleges ChatGPT helped his estranged wife plan an attempt to poison him, and accuses OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman of safety failures. The complaint says Gates introduced Cheryl Gates to ChatGPT to help her make work-report templates. It alleges that she had hundreds of conversations with the chatbot during summer and fall 2025 about work, family and her marriage before turning to poisoning plans. The document quotes ChatGPT as saying, “Celsius actually hides those powders better.” Gates says he became severely ill for about 72 hours starting July 10, 2025.
