Circle says bitcoin collateral needs stablecoin liquidity

Circle says bitcoin can serve as collateral on institutional balance sheets, but not as operating liquidity, in a new issuer-published analysis dated Oct. 20, 2026. The company argues that wrapped bitcoin and stablecoins such as USDC are designed to perform different roles in onchain credit markets: BTC for long-duration collateral, and USDC for borrowing, settlement and day-to-day capital use. In the analysis, Circle says its wrapped bitcoin token, cirBTC, is backed 1:1 by native BTC and is intended to carry bitcoin into supported smart contract markets without changing the asset’s underlying exposure.
