CFTC proposes federal registration option for leveraged crypto exchanges

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has introduced a proposal offering a federal registration option for cryptocurrency exchanges. This proposal is aimed at exchanges that provide leveraged, margin, or financing options for retail crypto transactions and marks a significant step toward potentially creating a federal framework for certain crypto venues. While basic spot-trading platforms would remain under state oversight, the proposed changes are not yet mandatory, as Congress has not given the CFTC authority to require all crypto exchanges to register federally.
