The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) has cleared the way for perpetual futures tied to individual stocks to begin trading on regulated U.S. exchanges for the first time. A trading instrument that helped transform cryptocurrency speculation is crossing into America’s traditional stock markets. On Nov. 3, CFTC Chairman Michael Selig announced that perpetual futures tied to individual equities can begin trading on CFTC-registered exchanges, marking the first such opportunity under U.S. regulation. The development follows the agency’s earlier approval of a bitcoin perpetual futures contract and brings a product long associated with offshore crypto platforms into the domestic securities market.
