Blockchain Groups Unite to Prepare for a Quantum Threat

Blockchain groups unite around a threat that remains theoretical: quantum computers could eventually expose parts of Bitcoin’s security. The Quantum Alliance, launched Oct. 15 in Lisbon, brings together nine organizations to develop shared standards for protecting cryptocurrency networks, wallets and infrastructure. The coalition’s contributors estimate that roughly 6.4 million $BTC have exposed public keys that sufficiently powerful quantum machines could exploit. But no quantum computer can carry out such an attack today, and estimates of when that might change vary.
