Bitcoin futures open interest rose as the price fell, signaling an influx of new short positions rather than a derivatives-driven liquidation cascade. Institutional exposure remained stable, leaving spot demand as the key near-term market force. In its “Hot Core CPI Hands Bitcoin’s Fate To Spot Flows” report published on Oct. 15, 2026, Bitfinex said the derivatives market did not amplify the previous day’s CPI reaction, while Bitcoin’s correction unfolded without cascading liquidations. Aggregate Bitcoin futures open interest across tracked exchanges fell to 619,667 BTC on Oct. 12, its lowest daily level of 2026 and the lowest since March 19, 2025.
