Bill Gates estimates that moving toward an economy shaped by artificial intelligence (AI) could take about 20 years, a broad timeline that puts potential effects on jobs and cyberattacks much closer. The Microsoft co-founder and former CEO gave the estimate in an interview published Oct. 22 at 10 a.m. ET (14:00 UTC). He called 20 years “a reasonably safe number,” while allowing that the transition could take somewhat less or more time. Gates is chairman of the Gates Foundation. The estimate concerns a wide economic shift, rather than a fixed date for a particular technology or industry.
