Australia sets July 2027 start for crypto transaction reporting to tax office

Crypto platforms will have to share data on Australian residents' trades with the ATO, adding to a busy run of new digital asset rules Australia wants to know what its residents are doing with their crypto. Platforms serving Australians will soon have to report those transactions directly to the tax office, with obligations reportedly kicking in from July 2027. The move pairs a new domestic reporting regime with the OECD’s Crypto-Asset Reporting Framework, known as CARF. The government expects the pair to bring in an estimated AUD 170 million in extra tax across the 2027-28 and 2028-29 financial years.
