Apple’s Shelved Plan to Replace 5,000 AppleCare Advisers With AI Agents Is a Map of Who Absorbs the Cost

There is a distinct gap between what Apple has built and what it has shelved. On one side, the company has deployed a generative AI voice assistant on its 1-800-APL-CARE support line, a system that has been answering calls since earlier this year. On the other side, a plan to lay off roughly 5,000 AppleCare support employees has been put on hold indefinitely . Apple has never announced the plan, and the company is no longer “currently looking to take such a step.” The AI support layer is already active, while the mass job reduction stays a proposal on ice.
